THIAMIN
Thiamin
is also known as vitamin B1. Thiamin is found in most types
of food including pork, vegetables, milk, cheese, peas, fruit,
eggs, wholegrain breads and cereals.
Thiamin is a water-soluble
vitamin. It helps the body release energy from carbohydrates
during metabolism. Thiamin is necessary for the normal functioning
of the nervous system.
Thiamin deficiency symptoms
include fatigue, anorexia, insomnia, and muscle aches and
pains, depression, heart, digestive system problems and a
disease called Beriberi.
"Deficiency of thiamin
causes degeneration of peripheral nerves, thalamus, mammillary
bodies, and cerebellum. Cerebral blood flow is markedly reduced,
and vascular resistance is increased." - The Merck Manual
