PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY
Peripheral
neuropathy is a complication of diabetes that affects as many
as half of all people with diabetes. Peripheral neuropathy
is a foot problem in people with diabetes that:
- affects
the nerves of the feet
- impairs
proper blood circulation
Peripheral neuropathy can
appear in:
- a
person who has no feeling in his or her lower extremities,
increasing the risk of having a foot problem and, potentially
results in the loss of a limb
- a person who feels
constant pain, which may limit mobility, impair sleep and
affect overall quality of life
Foot complications of diabetes
are the main cause of amputations that are not due to an accident.
With peripheral neuropathy, you can hurt your feet and have
a wound without being aware of it. You must take care of your
feet every day, because many foot ulcers would be avoided
by:
- regular
examination of the feet
- access
to appropriate care
- proper footwear
